IATA unveils September air cargo numbers
Latest report shows that demand is above pre-crisis numbers, but there are still capacity constraints
September 2021 data for global air cargo markets showed that demand continued to be well above pre-crisis levels. However, capacity limitations continue, as noted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Global demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs), was up 9.1% compared to September 2019, while capacity is 8.9% below pre-Covid levels. There are a variety of factors affecting global air cargo demand, IATA points out, including supply chain disruptions. These—alongside the resulting delivery delays—are resulting in long supplier delivery times.
“ … Severe capacity constraints continue to limit the ability of air cargo to absorb extra demand,” says Willie Walsh, IATA’s director general. “If not addressed, bottlenecks in the supply chain will slow the economic recovery from Covid-19.”
