SP doubles fill-finish, freeze dryer manufacturing output
New large-scale plant in Barcelona part of company's capacity-expansion pursuits to capitalize on biopharma's increased demand for lyophilization equipment
In order to stay ahead of the global demand for fill-finish and lyophilization (freeze dryer) equipment, SP Scientific Products (SP) has more than doubled its worldwide manufacturing capacity. A contributing factor toward this development is the opening of a new 43,056 square-foot large-scale manufacturing facility in Barcelona, Spain, for SP i-Dositecno sterile fill-finish systems. SP is also increasing its manufacturing headcount and streamlining many of its manufacturing processes, which the company says will result in reduced order-to-delivery lead times for its advanced aseptic pharmaceutical processing equipment.

SP i-Dositecno fill-finish systems are designed and manufactured in Barcelona as part of SP’s complete sterile handling solution, from bulk active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to filled product. The facility in Barcelona has been built alongside its original factory. Systems are already being constructed at the new site and include SP’s modular sterile filling, stoppering and capping machines.
SP’s global capacity expansion is also being facilitated by the reengineering of manufacturing at many of its other sites. At the SP Warminster, PA, plant, for example, streamlined manufacturing processes have been adopted to reduce build time while maintaining equipment quality.
