Following the launch of last year’s site in Rovello Porro, Italy,1 Singota Solutions, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has opened a new 100,000 square-foot plant in Balerna, Switzerland.2 Balerna is located near the Swiss-Italian border, providing the CDMO’s customers with a convenient location for reaching various European rail and road transportation networks.

Singota also has a European location in Basel, Switzerland, along with a North American HQ in Bloomington, IN.

The Balerna facility is three floors and features a rooftop solar power system. From an environmental standpoint, using solar power alongside the regional electric grid helps provide operational sustainability. The plant is also providing temperature-controlled storage—with ultra-cold capabilities coming soon—as it can house 4,000 pallet positions in the storage temperature conditions of 15-25°C, along with future capacity for storage at -20°C and at +5°C, expected to be available by later this year.

“This new Singota facility in Balerna, Switzerland, combines operational excellence with sustainability, offering clients confidence that their products are handled with the utmost care and attention,” said Travis Hudson, the company’s senior supply chain manager. “After many months of work and thoughtful diligence, Singota and our European team have delivered an outstanding new addition to Singota’s global portfolio of cGMP and GDP compliant supply chain logistics solutions.”

Additional capabilities of the Balerna facility include:

  • Operating as an open-bonded warehouse: This designation allows for efficient handling of both regulated and high-value goods, while also support graeater supply chain security, regulatory compliance, and cost efficiency.
  • Regulatory certification: The facility is GDP certified by the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products (Swissmedic).
  • Authorization of imports & exports: The plant is approved to handle these supply chain processes.

As for the aforementioned Rovello Porro facility, this site is already offering ultra-cold storage capabilities , including at cold storage (2-8°C), frozen storage (-20°C), and low-temperature storage (-40°C), with the latter being essential for biologics.

“ … The expansion into Rovello Porro is a testament to our commitment to providing flexible, tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of our clients,” added Hudson. “With this new facility, we are not only expanding our geographical reach but also enhancing our service offerings to include cutting-edge storage capabilities that are crucial for the next generation of biologic products.”
