Company's container maintains a -70°C temperature for at least 240 hours
CSafe Global, a provider of powered, temperature-controlled air-freight containers for pharmaceuticals, is partnering with BioNTech as the thermal shipping solution provider for Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine shipments from BioNTech’s Germany facility. The custom thermal shipping container, a double-wall vacuum insulated panel (VIP) insulated shipper, maintains -70°C (-94°F) for a minimum of 240 hours in order for the vaccines to safely arrive at their destination, CSafe says.
The container uses a double wall of VIP technology, a custom payload box with product vial trays with a built-in handle for simplified packing and unpacking. Thermal testing was up to par, and the shipper performed beyond the 240-hour benchmark, according to the company. CSafe says the container will maintain the desired temperature indefinitely with the addition of dry ice as needed.
The Pfizer-BioNTech jab is currently under consideration for full FDA vaccine approval for people 16 years of age and older. It was also recently granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for young adults 12 to 15 years of age.
