Stirling to become the preferred provider of ULT storage across Catalent’s business units
Catalent, a delivery technology provider, and Stirling Ultracold, a manufacturer of ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers for the life science sector, have reached an agreement where Stirling Ultracold will become the preferred provider of ULT storage across Catalent’s multiple business units.
The growth of biopharma within pharmaceutical research and development has driven the demand for Catalent to invest in cold chain infrastructure, as the company is looking to preserve biological and other temperature-sensitive materials.
Currently, the Catalent-Stirling partnership has seen the delivery and installation of over 200 freezers, (with 60 more in the pipeline), into Catalent’s clinical supply services and cell and gene therapy sites in the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific. With a temperature range from -20ºC (-4ºF) to -86ºC (-123ºF), Stirling freezers use 100% natural refrigerants, and during a standard 10-year lifespan, they will produce around 30% of the carbon dioxide during operation compared with legacy ULT freezers, the manufacturer notes.
